A superb traditional Port from a legend of a house. Cockburn (pronounced Coburn) were a pre-eminent Port house at the turn of the 20th Century, as shown by their 1908 vintage being identified in two recent historical tastings as best on the day and one of the best Ports ever made. New owners the Symington family are the current leaders in Port, and have produced this vintage as a bicentennary of Cockburn's establishment in 1815. An ambitious wine that recreates the wine's original depth, elegance and above all finesse, the Cockburn's 2015 is an important and highly collectable wine for long-term cellaring.

Its Origins

Cockburn was founded nearly 200 years ago by Scotsman, Robert Cockburn, who returned to Portugal after first visiting the country as a soldier fighting under Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars. Originally it was based in the Douro valley, the traditional centre of Port production. A year later, Cockburn moved east to the Upper Douro Valley. Cockburn has a reputation as innovators, which, in such a traditional and conservative industry is sometimes considered disregard for the “rules”. It has, however, brought them great success, namely the revival of the Touriga Nacional vine. A grape recognised for its exceptional quality. Touriga Nacional now accounts for 35% of Cockburns yield. Cockburns has led the way in modernising standards of wine and environmental management and in 1994 it became the first wine company to be awarded the ISO 9002 for quality management, wine making and production operations. The ex-owners of Cockburns, Beam Global Spirits, decided to divest the Cockburn’s Port Brand to the Symington Family Estates, the leading producer of premium quality ports. Following the transaction, the Symington family has applied their skill and expertise in the production of Port, which dates back for generations, towards further development and growth of Cockburn’s around the world.

What The Critics Say

"Spring violets the nose has freshness fragrance the start of the palate bramble and bilberry. Rich in the middle the fruit is ripe the palate velvet smooth fleshy and supple with at the back fresh fruits giving a lighter feel the finish has purity and elegance." (May 2017) Drink 2031 - 2050

94/100 James Suckling

"Fantastic aromas of crushed berries and flowers. Some mineral undertones. Violets. Very fine and polished with ultra-fine tannins. Medium sweet. Fresh and extremely clean. Very crisp and clean for such a hot year. This celebrates the 200th anniversary of Cockburn." (May 2017)

18.5 Jancis Robinson

"This was the Syms’ second vintage port from this house. From 70% Quinta dos Canais and quite a bit from Quinta do Vale Coelho. South-facing vines. 40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 9% old mixed vines (350 g of fruit per vine) and a bit of Alicante and Sousão. 3,500 cases – just 10% of production (very unusual in the world of wine). Blackish purple. Neat and focused and fresh and luscious. Quite sweet and purple and very charming. Tingling on the finish. Very exciting and energetic. Some black-pepper top note on the sweetness. Quite a dry end. Lots of chew. Very long term and ambitious. Hint of Edinburgh rock. Drink 2038-2065"
