Mainly old vine Grenache (50-80 years) with Syrah, Mourvedre and Vaccarese.
“Charvin may indeed produce the Richebourg of Chateauneuf du Pape.” - Robert Parker. Laurent Charvin runs this small family estate located in the north of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The domaine has vineyard holdings of just 8 hectares in Chateauneuf-du-Pape and 13 hectares in Cotes du Rhone. The average age of the vineyards is over 50 years old with the oldest being nearly 80 years of age. Laurent Charvin describes his vineyard site as being ‘cool’ for Chateauneuf as their vines are mostly planted on sandy north facing slopes.
What The Critics Say
94-96/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds
"Lurid ruby-red. Sexy, highly perfumed raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille scents are complemented by hints of musky rhubarb and Asian spices. Palate-staining sweet red and blue fruit and spicecake flavors show power as well as superb vivacity thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. The floral quality comes back emphatically on a strikingly long, sappy finish shaped by smooth, slow-mounting tannins. This might be the finest wine to emerge from this estate that I have ever tasted, and I've had some pretty amazing ones over the years."
95/100 Wine Cellar Insider
"Showing a good depth of color, with loads of juicy, fleshy, black cherries, plums, thyme, cracked pepper and herbs. The wine balances between perfectly, being full bodied and elegant, with a soft, silky, spicy, kirsch packed finish."
18/20 Jancis Robinson
"Tasted blind. Bright crimson. Rich and racy with real depth of flavour. Masses of fine tannins and really rather majestic. Hint of ginger syrup. Grown-up wine. Long." Drink 2024 - 2038
