Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the estate's current property in the 1950‘s when they moved to Rabaja from Barbaresco. Bruno took over the estate when his father died in 1978. As a consummate modernist, Bruno uses modern technology to produce wines with tremendous intensity of fruit balanced by the characteristic Piemontese structure and a judicious use of oak. His wines look, smell and taste like real Nebbiolo and unlike an increasing number of other Piemonte producers, he never feels the need to add a certain extra something to deepen the colour or round out the palate. Bruno started bottling in 1978 and since then has risen to the top of the quality tree in this area, producing a Barbaresco and the single vineyard Rabaja Barbaresco. His daughter, Luisa now works with him at the estate as the marketing manager.
What The Critics Say
93/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner
"This wine will be released next September and represents a totally new product from Bruno Rocca and his children. The Rocca family owns five hectares in the Currà cru and has been buying small parcels over the years since 2001. Fruit from the lower-altitude parts of the cru go to the Langhe Nebbiolo. The best parts end up in the 2015 Barbaresco Currà. The soils in this cru are characterized by an important mineral component with sandy limestone. Winemaking was executed with as little racking as possible to avoid contact with oxygen. The wine is crisp, contained and very elegant as a result. Drying mineral tones of flint and campfire ash add to the polished intensity of the bouquet." Drink 2020 - 2040
92-95/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"Here in its first release as a vineyard designate, the 2015 Barbaresco Currà is energetic and focused, as wines from this site in Neive often are. It will be interesting to see if the 2015 gains volume and depth. Today, it is a bit nervous. Some of that may be attributable to its recent bottling. We will see." Drink 2020 - 2035
17.5 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming
"Subtle black cherry fruit with fine, tacky tannic feel and a tight, understated palate that still seems only half-formed. This is one to leave well alone to allow greater development, hinted at by the long but subtle peppery length. (RH)." Drink 2020 - 2040
