A truly great Chardonnay from Meursault's lauded 'Genevrieres' vineyard. As Meursault has no Grand Crus, Premier Cru wines like this are the ultimate and definitive expression of the famous style. The soil here is lime and clayish gravel with some iron, allowing a beautiful balance of stony drainage and water holding for fruit lushness. While it is relatively warm and ripe, such austere soils produce high fruit quality with depth and mineral complexity. A rounded and complete expression of great Chardonnay terroir – and very good value for the price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

89-91/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"(a blend of two plots): Apple, spices and subtle smoky oak on the nose. Round, ripe flavors of peach and pear are lifted by a note of lime blossom. Good energy here from the higher-altitude parcel on chalkier soil. This wine normally shows more minerality with bottle aging, notes Weber, but it's already suave and fine-grained, with good inner-mouth lift. Among the higher-acid 2015 whites here, at 4.2 grams per liter."

Parker's Wine Advocate, Neal Martin

"The 2015 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières comes from two parcels that total 2.6-hectares, one generous and the other more acid-driven. It has an attractive bouquet: toffee apple, hints of walnut oil and linseed, not intense but it does gather momentum in the glass. The palate is well balanced with an overtly tropical opening, quite honeyed in style." Drink 2018 - 2028
