A truly great Chardonnay from Meursault's lauded 'Genevrieres' vineyard. As Meursault has no Grand Crus, Premier Cru wines like this are the ultimate and definitive expression of the famous style. The soil here is lime and clayish gravel with some iron, allowing a beautiful balance of stony drainage and water holding for fruit lushness. While it is relatively warm and ripe, such austere soils produce high fruit quality with depth and mineral complexity. A rounded and complete expression of great Chardonnay terroir – and very good value for the price.

Its Origins

Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Burghound, Allen Meadows

"Marvelously energetic and intensely mineral-driven flavors also possess excellent cut that characterizes the bitter lemon and saline-inflected finish that delivers seriously fine length. This chiseled effort is almost Chablis-like and will require at least a few years of bottle age first." Drink 2024+

90-92/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"(still finishing its malo; as with the Perrières, these vines produced a full 40 hectoliters per hectare in 2016): Bright, pale, slightly cloudy yellow. Apple and a note of Christmas spices on the nose. Rich, plush and deep. Really spreads out in the mouth without leaving any impression of heaviness, with the dried apricot fruit complemented by oak spices. Finishes with rising length and a slight phenolic edge but appears to have the middle-palate sweetness to support it."

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Richard Hemming

"Ripe toffee-apple notes on the nose and rich, fleshy texture on the palate. Loads of core fruit driving the persistence. Full of potential for future complexity, and counters its fullness with excellent acidic bite on the finish. (RH)." Drink 2020 - 2031
