Today the Burgundian wine domaine of Bouchard Pere et Fils can trace its origins back to 1731, though it is no longer family owned. In 1995 the Champagne house Joseph Henriot acquired the company and quality has risen as a consequence. Bouchard is led by Stéphane Follin Arbelet, while the wines are made by Philippe Prost - who has been with the company since 1978. An impressive gravity-flow winery on the Route de Savigny, the Cuvérie St Vincent, was completed in 2005 and enables them to process all their wines with optimum efficiency. Bouchard’s total holdings comprise 130 hectares, including 12ha of grand crus and 74ha of premier crus, which makes them the largest vineyard owners in the Côte d’Or.
(Note: The Teuron's vineyard wine from Bouchard's competitor Louis Jadot is called Theurons, with an "h").
What The Critics Say
90-92/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer
"(these vines are planted on a steep, limestone-rich slope): Bright red-ruby. More backward and medicinal on the nose than the Clos de la Mousse, offering aromas of black cherry and crushed stone. Very concentrated but youthfully backward and dominated in the early going by its serious backbone of ripe tannins. But this wine boasts lovely Pinot purity and energy in a very dark style and finishes with excellent clarity and length."
91/100 and rated "outstanding" in Burghound, Allen Meadows (2014 vintage)
"Here the wood treatment is sufficiently strong that it stops only just short of dominating the ripe, fresh and airy mix of rose petal, red currant and soft spice aromas. There is a lovely mouth feel and better than average detail to the utterly delicious and caressing medium weight flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality on the sleek, dusty and complex finale that is both balanced and impressively persistent. Worth checking out and note that my rating assumes that the wood will be integrated in time."
