Boneline are a Waipara operation with a serious focus on terroir. Waipara’s lime-rich soils and nearly identical climate to Chablis allow Boneline to explore stylistic bridge points between the more restrained French and more brightly fruited characteristics of New Zealand terroir wines. The name Boneline itself invokes a network of ideas linking their wines and terroir to the primordial history of the site, directly referring to fossilised fish bones that have been found around the Waipara River - which also appear on their labels - and indirectly referring to the lime in the soil, itself a residue of fish calcium that forms the various bone-like substrata of many Waipara vineyards and makes the region such a special place for wine. Bringing to their work a broad range of human and marketing as well as winemaking talents, Boneline look set to define new possibilities for their exceptional place and its offerings.
What The Critics Say
18-/20 Raymond Chan
"Even, dark ruby-red colour with black hues, a little lighter on the edge. The bouquet is firm and well-packed with deep aromas of redcurrant and aromatic blackcurrant fruit entwined with a layering of dark herbs, unfolding nuances of dark plums, liquorice and mint. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and plush with sweet and vibrant fruit flavours of redcurrants, subtle blackcurrant notes, dark plums all entwined with dark herbs and nuances of liquorice and spices. The fruit forms a deep and solid core, the mouthfeel showing good presence and weight. Soft, fine-grained, powdery tannin extraction and integrated acidity underlines the fruit. The wine flows to a soft lingering finish. Match with herb-marinated lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6+ years. A blend of 44% Cabernet Franc, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, vines up to 28 y.o., hand-picked, destemmed and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in approx. 30% new oak. 18.0-/20 Jul 2018 RRP $40.00" Drink 2018 - 2025
