Serious stuff, the Celebre from Ata Rangi is consistently one of NZ's best red blends. Otherwise a Bordeaux mix, the added Syrah tilts it in a slightly different direction with a nice note of pepper-licorice. Always held up by a proper spine of ripe tannins it can need aging, but also offers ripe, fully realised fruit even straight off the shelf. A sure bet on quality.

Its Origins

Ata Rangi, meaning "dawn sky" or "new beginning" is a small New Zealand winery with an enviable international reputation for Pinot Noir. Located at the southern end of the North Island, it is owned and managed by a family trio - Clive Paton, wife Phyll and Clive's sister Ali. Clive planted the first vines on a small, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the Martinborough village in 1980 as one of a handful of people who pioneered winegrowing in the area, after reading a 1978 scientific report which showed Martinborough had a micro-climate similar to that of Burgundy. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the inaugural Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa or "Grand Cru of New Zealand". With a skilled team in place, including dynamic winemaker Helen Masters, Clive now has more time to focus on his commitment to conservation and to the Ata Rangi alliance with Project Crimson. Ata Rangi is ISO-14001 and SWNZ certified, with a slow move into organic viticulture taking place as of now.

"The nose is bright and intense with sweet red fruit and hints of cassis. Aromatics are tempered with notes of fennel and coriander seed, the palate unfolding with flavours of ripe red fruits and fresh blackcurrant. There is great concentration at the core and a suppleness thanks to the fine, ripe tannins. Delicious now and will develop with age in bottle over the next decade. -- 2016’s warmer than average temperatures delivered excellent conditions to fully ripen the later-maturing varieties that make up this classic Ata Rangi blend. Notably, it’s also the 30th year of Célèbre from our almost four decades on the land. The original Cabernet-Merlot dominant blend has evolved to predominantly Merlot-Syrah with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc and Malbec contributing both complexity and structure."

"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with slight purple hues. The nose is well-proportioned with deeply concentrated and intense aromas of ripe blackberry and black plum fruit melded with notes of dark raspberries entwined with Asian spices, black pepper and minerals, unfolding a fine blackcurrant, cassis and herbal edge, with dark-red floral elements emerging with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the palate is packed with concentrated and deep flavours of ripe blackberries, dark raspberries and plums, with notes of black pepper, Asian spices, liquorice, currants and herbs. The fruit is sweetly rich and supported by considerable fine-grained tannin structure with a line of lacy acidity providing tension and drive. The flavours blossom with spices and florals as the wine carries to a long, lingering finish. Match with lamb, beef, venison, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 8+ years.
