Top scoring sauvignon by Bob Campbell in his Gourmet Traveller Tasting scoring a 96/100. A complex Sauvignon showing textural oak influence, this is Astrolabe’s answer to Cloudy Bay’s Te Koko (with a realistic price tag). From the limestone-rich Kekerengu coast this is all about layers of minerality and complexity, some juicy notes of citrus and green-herbal character telling you it's Sav while the body and texture tell you it's not to be trifled with under the afternoon sun, but saved for some serious dinner.

Sauvignon Blanc

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

Flagship sauvignon blanc from the Kekerengu Coast that’s been hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in barrels using indigenous yeasts. A very textural wine that’s deliciously rich and smooth. Ripe tree fruit and chalk/mineral flavours, with a suggestion of savoury funky character for extra complexity.
