A beautiful example of a fuller-bodied Marlborough style. Rounded, ripe plum and spicy oak play a warming role against balanced acidity and fine tannins, all of which smacks of what a perfect season it was in 2014. The Province is not a wine that shouts like some, but subtly generous in that alluring and savoury way that Pinot should be. Another delicious offering from master winemaker Simon Waghorn and a snapshot at the bright future Marlborough has in elegant Pinot.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

93/100 "Outstanding" Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier

"Youthful and intensely fruity bouquet loaded with ripe dark cherry fruits with a mangosteen, plum and dark raspberry suggestion; plenty of vanilla and lightly toasted oak layer, concentrated and inviting overall. On the palate – harming, engaging, fruity and dry; fruit flavours reflect the palate; medium+ acidity and tannins with fine textures and silky moments; great balance and length. Drink now if decanted." Drink 2019 - 2026.

92/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Fleshy pinot noir with good weight and ripe plum, dark berry and smoky oak flavours. The wine has a pleasing texture and a lengthy finish. Accessible now but with some cellaring potential 13/7/2017." Drink 2017 - 2022

92/100 Wine Spectator

Impressive for the linear, focused beam of cherry, cranberry and Earl Grey tea notes, with white pepper and dried rose petal accents. The sleek body and spicy, lingering finish make this memorable. Drink now through 2028.
