Chardonnay is a grape Marlborough is stealing the limelight for. Astrolabe's Simon Waghorn cut his teeth making Gisborne Chardonnay and this offering puts his knowledge on display in the Province. Weighty and full but with vibrant aromatics, defined fruit and minerally freshness - this is why we reckon Marlborough Chard is underpriced. But Astrolabe have known that for years. Try it.

Its Origins

Astrolabe was created in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, the culmination of a career that began in South Australia in 1982. Winemaking later led Simon and his family from Te Kauwhata to Gisborne, where he specialised in Chardonnay, and eventually to Marlborough where in 1996 he and his wife Jane Forrest-Waghorn joined with old friends Paul Davenport and Sally Lewis to have a go at their own label…and so began Astrolabe. Today they work with a number of growers scattered all over Marlborough, from Awatere valley to the Kekerengu coast to the Wairau Valley, developing a wide portfolio of iconic wines that celebrate the varieties and terroirs of Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

Caros review - rated top value in our recent Chardonnay tasting blog

"It shouldn’t have been surprising for this to be the last wine of the day, given a slightly higher price – like the Ata Rangi. But it was impressive to see this classic of Marlborough appearing ‘bigger’ – while remaining fresher – than the Hawkes Bay wines. It was as if, like the Giesen, the bright fruit and penetrating aromatics of Marlborough had such an open, expressive, mouth-filling effect that it came across as rich – even though the actual aromas and flavours were never ‘fat’, ripe, or overtly fruity. Instead it remains a checklist of sophisticated Chardonnay stuff: lemony citrus, apple and white stonefruit characters are defined but restrained, while the slightly creamy mouthfeel stays perfectly lively and long thanks to stoney mineral acidity. The whole package is beautifully framed by mealy notes and classy, toasty oak. A technically perfect Chardonnay, it has everything while being refreshing and simply delicious to drink. Marlborough Chardonnay is climbing up the order, literally!" http://www.caros.co.nz/blog/chardonnay-tasting-range-best/

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2014 vintage)

"The 2014 vintage (4*) was hand-harvested in the Wairau Valley and Southern Valleys, and fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and puncheons. Already drinking well, it is mouthfilling, fresh and creamy-textured, with strong, peachy, slightly buttery and nutty flavours, gentle acidity, and good complexity and harmony."
