The name refers to Ants - the players doing the heavy lifting at Altos Las Hormigas may be humble by nature, though their reputations are anything but. Foremost among them is Alberto Antonini, winemaker at Tuscan legend Antinori and arguably Italy's leading consultant. Early on (1995) he and fellow Italian Antonio Morescalchi identified the potential of Argentinian Malbec at the top end - both high priced wines and made at high altitudes in Mendoza. Now they and their other expert partners are being proved right. As the world recognises the stunning value and potential of Argentinian wine in general and Malbec in particular, Altos Las Hormigas are twenty years ahead of the curve, with lots of groundwork in place cleaning up their winery, adapting their viticultural techniques and, in particular, developing specific understandings of terroir to place Mendoza alongside the world’s great wine regions. Their top labels from three evelated, lime-rich sites are hardly expensive but speak for themselves as simply some of the most pure and expressive wines of place in the world.
What The Critics Say
"Deep cherry red. Finely dusty/rocky edge to the dark fruit. Again some black olive but avoiding all otiose sweetness. Cool, fresh and elegant, with the cool finesse of concrete fermentation and ageing. Juicy and paper-fine texture. More closed but perhaps a little richer than the 2016. (JH)" Drink 2017 - 2020
