A beautiful Chardonnay for a crazy price.Cleared for a label change. Some of the ripe, succulent fruit of nice warm year some was actually hand-harvested, with whole bunch fermentation bringing surprising poise and complexity. Gentle citrus and tree fruit harmonise with nice toasty and bready notes of good yeast contact, contributing to a slightly oily palate feel. Rounded and weighty but never overblown, this is a long, subtle and sophisticated wine for a price we can't quite believe. Easy decision at this price!

Its Origins

After immigrating from Holland and establishing a successful nursery business, the Ham family side stepped into fine wine in 1989. They purchased their land in a Hawkes Bay area with no special name at the time, but which would later become renowned as the Bridge Pa Triangle. Planted in a wide range of Hawkes Bay staples as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Alpha Domus offer Aviation themed branding to reflect a local airfield and the historic planes sometimes launched from there. Among these individualistic wines are some classics and and some more unique blends, for example the Aviatrix - which has been one of the few whites to include both Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc in the mix. With a focus on quality and clean, perfectly ripe fruit, Alpha Domus offer a characterful yet classy expression of Hawkes Bay style.

What The Critics Say

18/20 Raymond Chan

Bright, light golden-yellow colour with some depth, a little lighter on the rim, with slight green hues. This has a full nose with ripe fruit aromas of citrus fruit melded with savoury nutty and toasty oak, creamy barrel-ferment elements and a layering of buttery MLF. Medium-bodied, the palate has full and up-front flavours of ripe citrus and tropical fruit along with nutty, toasty oak and butterscotch MLF. The mouthfeel is rounded with broad, mouthfilling flavours underlined by fresh acidity. The wine flows with good energy and linearity to a long, lingering finish of exotic fruits, toast and butterscotch. This is an up-front and full-flavoured Chardonnay with rich citrus and tropical fruits, along with nutty oak, creamy and buttery MLF and a thread of cutting acidity. Match with roasted pork over the next 3 years. Clones 15, 6 and Mendoza fruit, fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 6 months on lees with batonnage and given oak contact, undergoing full MLF. 18.0-/20 Feb 2018 RRP $20.00

Michael Cooper

"Enjoyable now, the 2015 vintage is a 'fruit-driven' style, estate-grown in the Bridge Pa Triangle and lightly oaked. Light lemon/green, it is a fresh, finely balanced, medium-bodied wine, with very good depth of citrusy, peachy flavours, and hints of butter and toast adding a touch of complexity. Priced right."
