Yalumba was founded in 1849 by Samuel Smith, British migrant and English brewer, who had brought his family to Angaston, Barossa Valley, seeking a new life. After purchasing a 30-acre parcel of land just beyond the southern-eastern boundary of Angaston, Smith and his son began planting the first vines by moonlight. Samuel named his patch "Yalumba" – aboriginal for "all the land around". Five generations and 160 years later Yalumba, Australia's oldest family owned winery, has grown in size and stature, and since 1989 the company has been run by Robert and Sam Hill Smith. Yalumba owns over 1000 acres of vineyards, as well as buying in grapes from selected growers, some of whom have been working with Yalumba over 4 generations. The winery is modern and hi-tech and is one of the very few wine companies in the world to have its own cooperage!
What The Critics Say
94/100 James Halliday
"Gleaming straw-green; the expressive bouquet ranges through orange blossom to baker's spices, the palate retaining shape and freshness through to the long, citrussy/minerally acidity on the finish. If Yalumba had set out to make roussanne its flagship, its ride to victory might have been faster." Drink by 2022
89/100 Huon Hooke
"Medium to light yellow colour and a herby aroma of chamomile and curing meadow hay, with a trace of honeysuckle. The palate is light-bodied and soft, with a slight hollowness in the mid-palate and moderate length. It's distinctive and different 15 MAY 2015." Drink 2015 - 2018
90/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer (2013 vintage)
"(fermented and aged in used French oak barriques for 11 months): Light, bright gold. Suave, understated aromas of lemon curd, yellow plum, brioche and chamomile gain energy with air, picking up dusty mineral and ginger qualities. Silky, seamless and broad on the palate, offering juicy citrus and pit fruit flavors complemented by subtle fennel and floral nuances. In an elegant style, with a long, smooth finish that leaves gently sweet orange and candied ginger notes behind. "
