This exceptional Hawkes Bay Cabernet is indeed "designed for greatness" (Sam Kim). Classic characters of left bank Bordeaux power the palate: nuances of cedar, leafy tobacco and rusty earth remain palpable amongst deep swathes of lush black fruit, set on a fine tannic structure. Whether decanting soon or laying down, this is New World Cabernet at a serious level of purity and quality.

Its Origins

With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.

What The Critics Say

98/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Very impressive Gimblett Gravels cabernet sauvignon, with textbook varietal flavours of cedar, cigar box and cassis plus a subtle hint of fresh herbs and a seasoning of very classy oak. This is a flagship wine that thoroughly justifies its exalted status. Should develop magnificently with bottle age. 15/7/2016." Drink 2016 - 2029

97/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"Legacy is an appropriate name for this exceptional wine. Classic, firm, expressive and engaging, and offers symphonic flavours and multi-layered texture. Aromas of cassis, Black Doris plum, cedar and cigar lead to a concentrated and densely weighted palate that is ripe, rounded and extremely long. The wine combines awesome fruit power and purity with elegant oak infusion and textural mouthfeel. This is destined for greatness. From their Omahu Gravels vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: 2018 to 2032. $70.00. www.vidal.co.nz. June 2016."

5 Stars and 19+/20 Raymond Chan

"Very dark, full black-red with purple hues, near impenetrable, a little lighter on the rim. This has a finely proportion nose, showing a core of ripe black berried fruits alongside blackcurrant essence, cassis liqueur, lifted mint and herbal elements, pencil shaving and spicy oak and nuances of iron-earth. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-presented with great depth, intensity and concentration of sweetly ripe, succulent fruit flavours of blackberries and blackcurrants. Layers of cassis, mint, herbs along with iron-earth and oak add complexing detail. This has a concentrated core with fine-grained tannin extraction providing drive and linearity. Refined acidity lends energy and freshness, and the wine carries to a long, lingering, tightly bound finish of black fruits with herbs, earth and oak nuances. Match with lamb, beef, venison, and semi-hard cheeses over the next 8-10 years. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the ‘Omahu Gravels’ vineyard, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 31 days on skins and aged 20 months in 50% new French oak barriques. 300 cases made. 19.0+/20 Jun 2016 RRP $69.99."
