A perfect-scoring, super-premium Chardonnay from the experts in European style. This new Vidal's label will be made in the very best vintages, and the first was the stunning Hawkes Bay summer of 2014, which set a new record for 'Growing Degree Days' at an amazing 1,455. When such conditions came to the beautifully course and loose, free-draining sandy silt and clay soils of the Lyons Vineyard the result was a wine of very special depth, texture, intensity, and balance. Keeping with his European tastes, legendary winemaker Hugh Crighton chose to preserve this in turn with a balanced use of oak -- only 10 months in wood, of which only 50% was new -- so the intense purity of fruit could remain lush and lively within the signature flinty, mineral and rich textural layering of his style. Seriously fantastic to decant now or age -- an instant collector's item!

Its Origins

With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.

What The Critics Say

20/20 Perfect Score, Raymond Chan

"Intense and remarkably penetrating aromas of piquant white stonefruits harmoniously layered with complexing flint and mineral notes, along with creamy and nutty oak, with smoke and toast. The nose has great depth and unfolds in volume with aeration, the fruit blossoming. Medium-full bodied, the palate has immense depth and intensity, but with a finely concentrated heart and elegance and finesse as a feature. The flavours are a complex amalgam of white stonefruits, white florals, flint and minerals, creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes, and smoky, toasty oak. The mouthfeel is lively with lacy acidity, and is underlined by fruit-driven power providing considerable linearity. The wine carries with excellent energy to a very long, sustained finish of stonefruits, nuts and smoke that lingers forever. Serve with grilled and roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years. Hand-picked clone 15 fruit from the ‘Lyons’ vineyard ‘Love Block’, vines planted in 1996, WBP and indigenous yeast barrel-fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months on lees in 50% new French oak barriques, undergoing batonnage and MLF, followed by one month in tank. 736 bottles made. 20.0/20 Sep 2017 RRP $120.00." 98/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A new flagship chardonnay for Vidal with intense citrus, mineral, struck flint, nectarine and spicy oak flavours. This wine makes a strong statement. Youthful, powerful, elegant and potentially very complex wine. Only 736 bottles made. It will only be made in exceptional vintages. A very impressive chardonnay 9/9/2017." Drink 2017 - 2021

98/100 wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"A spectacular chardonnay. The gloriously expressed bouquet shows grapefruit, rockmelon, gun smoke, toasted almond and vanilla aromas with subtle savoury nuances. The palate is superbly concentrated and powerful, while remaining vibrant and elegant, delivering layers of fine texture backed by bright acidity. It is symphonic, perfectly proportioned and immensely seductive with its pristine fruit flavours and engaging savoury notes. A dramatic and profound chardonnay for serious wine enthusiasts. At its best: 2018 to 2026. $120.00. www.vidal.co.nz. Sept 2017." Drink 2018 - 2026
