With a passion to pursue winemaking in his adopted country, Spaniard Anthony Joseph Vidal purchased a Hawkes Bay racing stable in 1905, converted it into a wine cellar, planted vines and established himself as one of New Zealand's early wine innovators. From these pioneering beginnings, Vidal has gone on to create highly-acclaimed wines from one century to the next. The passion that created Vidal over 100 years ago burns just as brightly today, represented by the eternal flame adorning each bottle of Vidal wine. Modern state-of-the-art technology is used in conjunction with traditional winemaking techniques and some original elements of the building are used for Chardonnay fermentation and maturation. The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices, thanks to winemaker Hugh Crichton’s passion for the environment.

"Intense and remarkably penetrating aromas of piquant white stonefruits harmoniously layered with complexing flint and mineral notes, along with creamy and nutty oak, with smoke and toast. The nose has great depth and unfolds in volume with aeration, the fruit blossoming. Medium-full bodied, the palate has immense depth and intensity, but with a finely concentrated heart and elegance and finesse as a feature. The flavours are a complex amalgam of white stonefruits, white florals, flint and minerals, creamy and nutty barrel-ferment notes, and smoky, toasty oak. The mouthfeel is lively with lacy acidity, and is underlined by fruit-driven power providing considerable linearity. The wine carries with excellent energy to a very long, sustained finish of stonefruits, nuts and smoke that lingers forever. Serve with grilled and roasted poultry, pork and veal dishes over the next 5-6+ years.
