The originals, Stonecroft discovered the Gimblett Gravels and their Reserve Syrah is from the area's oldest vines - planted in 1984 and now organically managed. Huge depth and density but also refinement and nuance. At this level it's hard to pick the country's best Syrah, and this is a serious choice - impressive in the glass and an authentic taste of history. 2013 speaks for itself on approachability and potential - don't dally.

Its Origins

The first winery to be established in the Gimblett Gravels Wine growing District, Stonecroft is a small boutique winery owned by Dermot McCollum and Andria Monin, who bought the property in 2010 and live on the Roy’s Hill Vineyard with their two children. Stonecroft is well known for its Syrah, Zinfandel, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay wines, and has the claim for the oldest Syrah vines in the country! Only organic practices are used and both the two original vineyards and the winery are fully certified organic with AsureQuality. The third vineyard is in conversion to organic status. Total production is small, with only 2,000 to 2,500 cases produced annually.

What The Critics Say

97/100 Bob Campbell

I recently opened a bottle of Stonecroft 2006 Syrah. It was terrific. I expect this wine to be even better. It’s wonderfully dense with a genuine “old vine” texture. Packed with dark berry, plum, black pepper, chocolate/mocha, liquorice and mixed spice flavours. This is a long-distance runner, although it is deliciously drinkable now.
