The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.

"The first commercial harvest of Lagrein. Hand-picked fruit destemmed and fermentation initiated with indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 10 month in 10% new oak. Ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, lighter edged. The nose is elegant and fresh with up-front fruit-focussed aromas of cherry essence, raspberries and tamarillos infused with herbs and pepper, lifted by red floral notes. Medium-bodied, bright, fresh and juicy flavours of cherries and raspberries are entwined with herbs and pepper. The fruit is up-front and primary in expression, supported by soft and supple tannins and enlivened by mouthwatering acidity. The wine leads to an elegant, lingering finish of cherries and herbs. This is a refreshing, bright, juicy and elegant Lagrein with cherry and herbal flavours and soft tannins.
