Gold at the Japan Wine Challenge 2017 and 5 Stars Raymond Cahn. Single vineyard pinot, hand plunged and matured in French oak barriques. This lovely red is the sophisticated version of Marlborough Pinot. It offers lovely aromatic red and dark fruits in a juicy and bright palate. It is texture and mineral depth that make this deceptively serious stuff – though still very easy to enjoy and even more so matched with food, especially the winged sort.

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The vineyard is nestled under Mount Tapuae-O-Uenuku (Maori" "Footprint of the Rainbow"). At the top of the Southern Alps, it strongly influences the climate, with its rain shadow bestowing low rainfall and low humidity upon the Awatere Valley. Along with sunny days and cool nights this creates perfect conditions for slow steady ripening and flavour development. Awatere grapes have a distinctive fruity yet steely and herbaceous flavour quite different to those produced elsewhere in Marlborough.

What The Critics Say

18-/20 Raymond Chan

"Ruby-red colour with some depth, lighter on the edge with slight purple hues. The bouquet is softly full and voluminous with aromas of dark red strawberry and red cherry fruit, unfolding a layer of red florals and subtly melded dark herb detail. The aromas are harmoniously entwined. Medium-full bodied, the palate is soft, rounded and harmoniously presented with gently mouthfilling flavours of dark red berry fruits along with soft red florals and nuances of dark herbs and spice. The mouthfeel is smooth and very finely structured with refined tannin extraction and integrated acidity. The palate builds in presence and leads to a full, sustained, fine textured finish of red fruits and florals with spice detail. Match with poultry and pork over the next 5 years. Hand-picked fruit, clones 667 and 777, indigenous yeast ferment initiated then inoculated, to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 25% new French oak barriques. 650 dozen made. 18.0-/20 Sep 2016 RRP $27.95."

91/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2013 vintage)

"The 2013 Pinot Noir - Block 8 has a pale to medium ruby color and still youthful nose of crushed red cherries, raspberry preserves and pomegranate with suggestions of garrigue, roses, Provence herbs and black tea. Light to medium-bodied, the palate delivers a great intensity or red berry and earth flavors, framed by grainy tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and savory." Drink 2017 - 2020
