Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

97/100 and rated "Outstanding" by Cameron Douglas MS

"Made with the two Cabernets and Merlot aromas reveal a focused and concentrated complexity with a core of fresh and baked black fleshed fruits, violets and sweet new wood scents. On the palate there’s an equal and powerful concentration of fruit surrounded by an abundance finely polished tannins, vibrant sweet acidity and layers of smoky oak, gravelly earthy qualities and long complex finish. This is a young wine still with plenty of development time ahead. If drinking before 2024 then decant and service with food. Ideal drinking from 2026 through 2034+." Drink 2026 - 2034+

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Quite a youthful wine from a top Gimblett Gravels vintage. Moderately intense with blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, cedar and spicy oak flavours. A vibrant, high-energy wine, with a mellow texture that makes it quite accessible. It has serious cellaring potential 7/7/2021." Drink 2021 - 2033

19/20 Raymond Chan Reviews, Candice Chow

"Very dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, near impenetrable, a little lighter edged. The nose is full, powerful and up-front with bold and rich, voluminous, but concentrated aromas of ripe blackcurrants, cassis liqueur, blackberries and a fine thread of dark herbs, the fruit entwined with decadent spicy and cedary oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full, opulent and rounded with exotic, succulently sweet and ripe black fruits along with black plum elements, melded with spicy and toasty oak. The flavours are mouthfilling forming a concentrated, solidly rounded core with real depth, unfolding layers of iron-earth, minerals and spicy, cedary oak. Very fine-grained tannins provide structure and firmness of line, carrying to a textured finish of black fruits and spicy oak. 12+ years. A blend of 62.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 12.5% Cabernet Franc fermented to 13.8% alc., the wine aged 10 months in 33% new French oak. 19.0+/20 Sep 2016 RRP $79.00."
