A premium Merlot from a renowned Hawke's Bay producer, the Nest has a serious track record of trophies and gold medals (. Great plantings in Gimblett Gravels produce a wine full of succulent black and red fruits, spice, firm ripe tannins and toasty character reflective of 18 months in French oak. Owner Gavin Yortt strives for quality in the vineyard and glass over marketing fanfare, resulting in an immensely satisfying drinker and a major cellaring prospect for the price.

Its Origins

Squawking Magpie Owner and Director Gavin Yortt planted the main Woodland’s vineyard in 1995, with further holdings in 2002 extending the focus on Hawkes Bay classic grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. They are members of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand and maintain a strong focus on cellaring wines and a quality-driven (rather than brand-driven) market strategy, which begins with rigorous vineyard management. Though not shouting from every shelf, on quality-for-value Squawking Magpie wines are often among the best Hawkes Bay has to offer.

What The Critics Say

Gold Medal, Hawkes Bay A&P Bayleys Wine Awards 2016 (current vintage)

Results of previous vintages include Trophy and Gold Champion Hawkes Bay Merlot at the 2014 New Zealand International Wine Show, as well as Trophy Champion Merlot and Blends at the 2016 International Wine Challenge

4.5 Stars Winestate Magazine

This sturdy, surprisingly youthful red is a single-vineyard blend of merlot (86%), malbec (10%) and cabernet franc (4%), matured for 20 months in French oak casks (33% new). It has bold, bright colour and a fragrant, fresh bouquet, with a hint of herbs. Mouthfilling, with vibrant plum and blackcurrant flavours, showing considerable complexity, it’s well worth cellaring to 2022 onwards.

93+/100 Andrew Caillard MW (2013 vintage)

"Medium deep colour. Intense, graphite, meaty aromas. Sweet redcurrant, mulberry fruit flavours, graphite, al dente textures, underlying savoury oak. Finshes al dente firm and long. Very expressive wine. 2016-2030."
