A top bottling from one of the biggest names in modern Barolo. At this stratospheric level of quality 'Le Vigne' is a special offering: whereas similar wines are usually single vineyard, this is a selection of their best quality across a range of top cru sites. Blending allows the Sandrone family to deliver perfection in the glass, crafting the finest aspects of each vintage into a very complete, compelling wine. This blending is specially useful in tricky vintages like 2014, when they delivered great purity thanks to almost doubling their vineyard staff. They did such a good job managing the vines that Galloni rates this two points above the 2012! Stocks will fly.

Its Origins

The Sandrone winery was founded in 1978, born from a desire to make the finest possible expression of the Nebbiolo grape from the unique terroirs of the Langhe. In late 1977, Luciano was able to purchase a first small part of the Cannubi vineyard. The following year (1978) he began making minute quantities of his own wine in the garage of his parents’ home, testing and refining his ideas about how to make a wine of distinction and high quality that respected the traditions of the Barolo, while incorporating many of the new technological innovations that were being used to make Barolo less forbidding and hard. With the 1989 and 1990 vintages, Luciano Sandrone caught the attention of the world with his Barolo Cannubi Boschis, made in minute quantities from his great estate vineyard site, which received 97 and 100 points from Robert Parker. This was one of the first perfect scores given to a Barolo. Currently the estate farms a total of 27 hectares, 75% of which are owned, and produces between 90-100,000 bottles (about 8,000 twelve-bottle cases) per year. Sustainable/organic.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Barolo Le Vigne once again shows the wisdom of blending fruit from different sites. If there is a vintage where blending has the potential to be the difference-maker, 2014 is it. So it is hardly surprising to find the 2014 Le Vigne in such great shape. The red cherry jam, mint, cedar and floral notes are all finely sketched. Medium in body and classy, the 2014 is beautifully textured and inviting from start to finish. All the elements are simply in the right place. Vineyard sources are Merli, Vignane, Villero and Baudana." Drink 2022 - 2039

94/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Monica Larner

"Luciano Sandrone and his daughter Barbara tell me that the 2014 harvest needs explaining. Many are quick to dismiss it given the difficulties of the growing season that saw abundant rain, hail and bombe d'acqua, or "water bombs," which are a dangerous phenomenon with intense rainfall in a very small radius. But hard work does pay off. The Sandrone family employed 38 people for farming, when the average harvest requires only 22 pairs of vineyard hands. Great care was required to keep the leaves and the clusters healthy. The 2014 Barolo le Vigne is bright and fruit-forward. It is perhaps more accessible in the near term compared to past editions. It delivers dark fruit nuances over a mid-weight and compact mouthfeel." Drink 2020 - 2040

17/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Tasted blind. Dark maturing ruby. Concentrated and a little smoky. Subdued fruit supported by chewy tannins. Tannins take the upper hand, but lingering cherry fruit plays out convincingly on the finish. (WS)" Drink 2018 - 2024
