Compelling stuff, this is as good a South African Chenin as you'll ever find. Huge intensity and concentration is present here - but effortlessly, in a fresh, mineral and "weightless" wine of perfect balance and aging potential. Broad yet focussed and linear, this is great Chenin Blanc fullstop. Wine to experience from Eben Sadie, a legend-to-be of South African winemaking.

Chenin Blanc

Its Origins

The Sadie Family is based in the Swartland region of the Cape wine lands. Eben Sadie, South Africa’s first certified celebrity winemaker, has been described by supporters as “one of the greatest and most original wine makers in the Southern Hemisphere.” Before Eben Sadie became a winemaker he travelled and worked in several of the world’s wine regions, including Austria, Germany, Italy, Burgundy and Oregan. When he came back to South Africa he worked under Charles Back at Spice Route in 1998. He eventually became the chief winemaker and Charles Back described him as “national asset for the South African wine industry.”

What The Critics Say

95/100 Parker's Wine Advocate

"From 90-year-old Chenin Blanc vines on sandstone soil, the 2014 Skurfberg is closed on the nose at first and then gradually unfurls with dried honey, honeysuckle, broom and hazelnut scents, just a touch of yeastiness underneath. It has wonderful delineation and complexity. The palate is extremely well balanced with enthralling poise and race, freshly sliced pear and red apple interlaced with five-spice towards the long finish. This is one of those wines that needs to be cellared for several years and will definitely repay you." Drink 2020 - 2045

94/100 Vinous, Stephen Tanzer

"(100% Chenin Blanc planted in around 1945 on mineral-rich sandstone at 680 meters in the Olifantsrivier ("rough mountain") area of Swartland): Full yellow. Bright, inviting aromas of white plum, elderflower and menthol. The palate conveys the freshness of high-altitude fruit, with soil-driven notes of ginger and quinine and a honeyed quality that comes off as weightless. Boasts outstanding intensity and length, finishing with a light dusting of tannins. A compellingly perfumed wine of great delicacy and class, and as much about the site as about the variety. The old bush vines here are planted at a density of just 1,111 plants to the hectare. This terroir resembles that of his Grenache, notes Sadie." Drink 2018 - 2025
