54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc
Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.
What The Critics Say
98/100 Bob Campbell MW
"A cabernet sauvignon-dominant blend with merlot and cabernet franc. This is elegance on a grand scale. Lovely ripe cabernet sauvignon with cedar, cigar box and subtle cassis characters occupies centre-stage, although fairly classy French oak competes for attention. A very complete wine - long, linear and perfectly balanced. 5/7/2016"

"Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with purple on the rim. This has a finely proportioned nose with concentrated and penetrating aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit along with black plums, cassis liqueur, fragrant herbs, complexing iron-earth mineral nuances and pencil-shavings oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich, vibrantly bright and succulent flavours of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries, along with cassis and herbal detail. The fruit is fresh and quite primary in expression, but reveals black mineral, cedar and pencilly oak detail. The fruit is supported by fine-grained, flowery tannin structure providing body and presence, and a firm, concentrated core and line. Fresh acidity lends energy, tension and drive, and the palate leads to a long, lingering finish of cassis, minerals and oak. This is a fine and firmly concentrated, vibrantly rich Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine with fine-grained, balancing structure. Match with lamb, beef and semi-hard cheeses over the next 9-12 years. A blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc from the Gimblett Gravels, hand-picked and indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged in 50% new French oak, with blending in late spring, and given further aging in barrel for a total of 20 months. 19.5-/20 Aug 2016 RRP $84.99 "

An exceptional Bordeaux-style red, and bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, violet, cedar and thyme characters with subtle mixed spice complexity. The palate is impressively concentrated and powerful, and delivers waves of delectable flavours and texture, firmly structured by fine, chalky tannins. It is sturdy and proper, and destine to evolve gloriously. A blend of cabernet sauvignon (54%), merlot (42%) and cabernet franc (4%) from the Gimblett Gravels district.
