Its Origins

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and malbec. Inky, intense red that is jam-packed with cassis, dark cherry, berry, chocolate-mocha, liquorice, charcuterie and smoky oak flavours. Layered, complex red that needs time to reveal its full potential 02 SEP 2022." Drink 2022 - 2039

92/100 Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW

"The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Helmsman is a rich, full-bodied and seductive Bordeaux blend combining firmness with ripeness. Oak-derived vanillins, spice and a robust structure make for a real mouthful of wine. Savory, spiced and long with ripe plum fruit, black tea leaf and licorice, this is a Kiwi wine that needs bottle age to allow its serious structure to mellow." Drink 2024 - 2037

92/100 James Suckling

"An inviting nose of pine cone, bark, crushed stone, blackcurrants and blackberries. Medium- to full-bodied with tight tannin structure. Juicy but focused with a fresh quality to the fruit, accompanied by savory spices and herbs. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and malbec. Best after 2023."
