Another great vintage for Sacred Hill's top Merlot blend. Perfectly crafted by Sacred Hill's expert winemaking team, this classic Bordeaux style offers black berry, spice and pencil shavings unfolding in layers of refined but fleshy fruit. With the structure to cellar for ages but beautiful even now in the glass or decanter, this is seriously good stuff for the price. Great vintages don't go on forever - grab this and don't wait!

Its Origins

Back in 1986, David and Mark Mason, with friend and winemaker Tony Bish, began with a simple philosophy of making more wine than they could drink, and sharing the rest. They had the perfect place to make it happen, under the shade of Puketapu (sacred hill), along the white, volcanic cliffs and river land gravels of the Dartmoor Valley in Hawke’s Bay. They were precious days by the river with friends, family and food. Sacred Hill is recognised as one of New Zealand's leading, multi award winning wineries. Focusing on the production of premium 'handcrafted' varietal wines the company's estate vineyards are now located in New Zealand's leading grape growing regions of Marlborough, Hawke's Bay and Central Otago.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

"From an outstanding vintage, this glorious merlot (83%) blend shows wonderful aromas of black/blueberry, game, cedar and clove with nuances of floral and cocoa. The palate is superbly weighted and rounded, and delivers awesome fruit power backed by loads of supple tannins. A youthful wine offering huge appeal already. From the Gimblett Gravels district. At its best: 2018 to 2028. "

"Merlot-dominant blend with malbec, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Big, rich and almost chewy red with the malbec component giving an earthy and slightly muddy richness to the wine. Intense and potentially complex red that can be appreciated now but will get better with bottle age. "Drink 2016 to 2024

5 Stars M.Cooper

"Merlot-based, this is a typically outstanding Hawke's Bay red from the Gimblett Gravels (principally the company's joint-venture Deerstalkers Vineyard). The wine spends its first year in mostly new French oak barriques, then another several months in new and older barrels. The 2014 vintage (5*), oak-aged for 16 months, is Merlot-dominant (83 per cent), with smaller portions of Malbec (8 per cent), Syrah (5 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (3 per cent) and Cabernet Franc (1 per cent). Boldly coloured, it is very generous, with rich, ripe plum and blackcurrant flavours, a hint of dark chocolate, good complexity, and the underlying structure to mature well. Still youthful, it's well worth cellaring to 2020+."
