Great value Hawkes Bay Syrah. Depth and length with beautiful Syrah clarity of dark fruit, pepper and florals in a really approachable, supple palate. The wine's medium body is a hallmark of 'serious' Syrah in a hot year. Redmetal spend time on quality rather than marketing, so quality is what you get for this very small price.

Its Origins

Redmetal Vineyards began in 1991 with the purchase of a north facing block of prime viticultural land in Hawkes Bay, a region renowned for it's agricultural excellence. The vineyard is part of an ancient riverbed that once carried rock down to the east coast from the steep Ruahine ranges that form part of the spine of New Zealand's North Island. These free-draining river deposited gravels (locally known as red metals) form the basis of the major fine wine producing areas within Hawkes Bay. It is inspirational that Grant Edmonds finds the time to continue to develop his and his wife Sue’s personal Hawke’s Bay wine project Redmetal Vineyards. As chief winemaker at Sileni Estates, his responsibilities must be considerable. The 6.5 ha vineyard on Marekahaho Road neighbouring Sileni Estates has changed slightly, with Merlot vines up to 24 y.o. making up 65% of the plantings. 7% is devoted to Cabernet Franc and there is 22% Syrah.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell

"Deeply tinted red with chocolate, liquorice, plum, dark berry and spice/black pepper flavours. Elegant wine with power. A structure of ripe tannins makes the wine easy to appreciate now but provides at least moderate cellaring potential."

18/20 Raymond Chan

"100% Syrah, fermented to 14.0% alc., with hand-plunging and pump-over, the wine aged 14 months in 20% new French oak. Very full, deep, purple-hued black-red colour, near impenetrable. This has a moderately full and deep nose with restrained fruit aromas of ripe black plums and berryfruit, releasing black pepper and lifted spices and floral elements with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the mouthfeel is soft-textured, plush and seamless with juicy red berry fruit and black pepper fruit flavours. Layers of spices, oak cedar and earth unfold and the palate flows smoothly with fine-grained, supple tannins balancing the fruit succulence. Soft, ripe acidity adds to the roundness, and the wine leads to a dry, finely textured finish with pepper, cedar and spice notes. This is a smooth, seamless, fine-grained Syrah with layers of red fruits, pepper, spices and cedar. Serve with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5-6 years. 18.0/20 Sep 2014 RRP $35.00."
