A beautiful Syrah-led blend from Penfolds, the Bin 138 is backed by Grenache and Mataro (aka Mourvedre). This year the dusky red berry fruit and body of Grenache have a strong say, even though the grape is only 21% of the blend. A highly classy and refined wine, for such a cheap price this drinks beautifully now and will cellar for a staggering period. One of the picks of the release.

Its Origins

Penfolds is undoubtedly one of the top wine companies in the world in terms of quality, product range and consistency. Peter Gago has now taken over winemaking responsibilities and a string of good vintages over the past five years has helped Penfolds stay at the top of the Australian wine boom.

What The Critics Say

17+/20 Jancis Robinson MW

"Very deep blackish crimson. Treacle-toffee nose. Quite firm and dry on the end. Savoury finish and really very serious. Long and lots of fruit even though it clearly has the framework for ageing. Real vigour and muscle. 64% Shiraz, 21% Grenache, 15% Mataro. Old vines and old oak. Acidity 6.1 g/l, pH 3.6. 12 months in seasoned French and American oak hogsheads." Drink 2017 - 2028

94/100 Andrew Caillard MW and 93/100 Tyson Stelzer
Winemaker notes on current vintage

"NOSE: Grenache driven aromatics – despite this variety representing only one barrel in fi ve of the blend! No oak to speak of… Cherry/strawberry fondue aromas somewhat indulged by a spray of fairy fl oss/sherbet dustiness. A more down-to earth cold meatloaf savouriness, although some persuasion required to aromatically detect aspic jelly? PALATE: Medium-bodied. An ethereal lightness (literally) – avec gloss and sheen. Refined. Structurally perceived as an initial (enveloping) outer husk of berried fl avours and tactile mouth imprint/attaque, followed by a mid-palate burst of fruits. This palate package is wrapped within a weave of seasoned oak, adhered via crisp acidity and tannins." Drink 2016 - 2025
