A voluptuous amd very special Rioja Reserva. This powerful old vine cuvee saw 26 months in barrel. With deep dark fruits and toasty oak it is rich and almost creamy in texture, with a beautiful balancing act of delicacy and density that only comes from lovingly tended old vines - in this case from an elevated site in Rioja Alta. Serious gear and a beautiful wine - you have to try this!

Overview

Grape

70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Graciano.

Its Origins

Bodega Muga was founded in Haro in 1932 and is still in family ownership; the company farms 250 hectares in La Rioja Alta and in addition has long-standing contracts with the owners of another 150 hectares. Located in the foothills of the Montes Obarenses, the five principal vineyards (El Estepal, La Loma, Blatracones, La Loma Alta, and Sajazarra) share clay and limestone soils, each with its own unique microclimate, informed by the happy coincidence of continental, Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. The extended Muga family controls all aspects of the production and advocates the complexity afforded by the entire canon of grapes, that is to say Tempranillo, of course for the red, but also Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano in addition to Viura and Malvasia for the whites.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Parker's wine Advocate, Luis Guttierez

"The Muga family is a lot happier about 2014 than your average Riojano, and the 2014 Selección Especial shows why. Through a selection of the vineyards and longer aging in barrel, this is a more-polished wine, very good with food (it's the one winemaker Jorge Muga usually has when he drinks one of his wines with a meal). There is very good acidity here, which is why I think this is so good with food. I really see that vintages produced from the higher-altitude, cooler places in Rioja where the Muga family sources their grapes are different from other parts of Rioja, and this 2014 is one of the finest and most balanced of the recent vintages of Selección Especial. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2017." Drink 2018 - 2026

95/100 James Suckling (2012 vintage)

"A linear and super-fine wine with black cherry and berry character and hints of flowers. Full body yet very tight and closed. Beautiful texture."

95/100 Tim Atkin
