Mills Reef’s top Chardonnay is consistently a richer style, with impressive presence of ripe stonefruit and oily weight on the palate. In the perfect 2013 vintage they just found it that much easier to nail that ripe, drink now fruit, without sacrificing the acidity and of course barrel aging that builds the Elspeth for optional development in cellar.

Its Origins

Mills Reef Winery was established in 1989 by the Preston family. Through commitment and dedication to excellence, the Mills Reef brand has established itself as one of New Zealand's premium labels with a particular reputation for outstanding Bordeaux varietal reds and Syrah. The winery is located on 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds in a semi-rural setting, just 5 minutes drive from Tauranga's CBD. The vineyards are located in the Hawke’s Bay area, and two of the flagship vineyards, the Mere Road Vineyard and the Mills Reef Trust Vineyard are located right in the heart of the world-renowned Gimblett Gravels. The Mere Road is a 16 hectare block painstakingly managed for low yields to produce the very best grapes for the multi-award winning ‘Elspeth’ and ‘Reserve’ wines.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell (2013 vintage)

"Bold, flavoursome Chardonnay with strong , ripe tree fruit flavours receiving support from classy oak, bran biscuit and hazelnut characters. Flagship Chardonnay that clearly deserves its exalted status. Nicely structured to give cellaring potential."

18.5/20 Raymond Chan (2013 vintage)

"The nose is finely expressed with an intense core of ripe, savoury citrus and yellow stonefruit aromas with subtly infused nutty oak, cream, nuts and toast. Medium-full bodied, the palate is a little restrained but showing flavours of yellow stonefruits, ripe citrus fruits and nuts. The mouthfeel is creamy from the barrel-ferment, and guided by a very fine textural thread and fresh, lacy acidity. Lovely mealy notes and toasty detail carry through to a very long and sustained finish. Match with roasted poultry and pork, and with rabbit or veal over over the next 5+ years. "
