A big Barossa Shiraz packed with lush fruit and spice - but also freshness and harmony thanks to the boutique practices of organic nuts, Kalleske. From an excellent year and top vineyards in more elevated parts of northwestern Barossa, Pirathon meaning 'pinnacle' is a great example of the modern adage for Aussie wine - 'rich but sophisticated.' It has authority and quality - as well as huge satisfaction - but what's special is the ethical and sustainable winemaking behind the gorgeous flavour. A very discerning version of the modern Aussie, to drink now or age a while.

Its Origins

In South Australia's Barossa Valley, the Kalleske family have been farming and growing grapes since 1853 near the village of Greenock. They are one of the region's leading grape-growing families consistently growing some of the Barossa's best quality grapes. After six generations of growing grapes, winemaker and seventh generation family member, Troy Kalleske, together with his brother Tony, established the Kalleske winery and made the first ‘Kalleske’ wine. The winery is situated on the family estate where traditional winemaking techniques ensure the vineyard realises its full potential as wine. The 120 acre vineyard is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines vary in age with the oldest remaining vineyard dating back to 1875 and an overall average vine age of about 50 years. The vineyard is low yielding with grapes grown organically and biodynamically and the winery is also certified biodynamic/organic.

What The Critics Say

Adelaide Review Hot 100 SA Wines of 2015/2016

“Sugar, spice, and many other things quite nice. Vanilla sponge, sweet cinnamon and notes of blueberry intermingle. Chalky tannin at the finish.”

Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perotti-Brown

"Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Pirathon Shiraz has expressive blackberry and warm plum scents with touches of tar, earth, underbrush and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, plush, rounded and mouth-filling, it gives plenty of fruit and grip with a long uncomplicated finish." Drink 2016 - 2021

Winemaker notes on current vintage

"Pirathon Shiraz 2014 is dark red-black in colour. The aroma displays a diversity of characters including dark plum, cocoa, savoury spice, Christmas cake, dried herbs, blueberry and nutty oak. The palate is full bodied with flavours of dark red and black fruits complimented by background toasty oak. The natural tannins are mildly chalky but stylish and well integrated giving a faultless structure. A generous length and persistent finish completes this very well balanced wine. Pirathon is a paramount expression of north-western Barossa that will reward time in the cellar for 5-10 years."
