Another huge discount on the Kalex brand which is getting a label revamp. This is a rich and compex, food-freindly vintage Pinot Noir Rose Methode from Central Otago. Grown in the 2014 vintage, it has enjoyed plenty of bottle time to round out with intriguing mineral and dried-fruit complexities. Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The bearer of a remarkable story, Alex Kaufman was a Polish holocaust survivor who arrived in America with ‘nothing but a quarter in his shoe’ and rose from laboratory cleaner to Pharmaceutical boss. Having fallen in love with the beautiful climes of Central Otago, the elderly but energetic Kaufman established Kalex wines, the stewardship of which is now taken by his daughter Irene Kaufman. With genuine backing to focus on quality fruit and winemaking - with Theo Coles at the winemaking helm - Kalex wines pander not at all to the market but instead make superbly classy and distinctive wines, reflective of classic European taste but capturing in a very refined form that clean, bright fruit and herbal aspect engendered by Central Otago’s harsh alpine conditions.

What The Critics Say

91/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim

It's delightfully fruited and engaging on the nose showing white flesh nectarine, strawberry, lemon zest and floral characters with subtle yeasty complexity. The palate delivers excellent weight and rounded mouthfeel backed by bright acidity, finishing long and mouth-watering." Drink 2020 -2022.

95/100 Cameron Douglas MS (2011 vintage)

"A copper/salmon coloured appearance - very bright and oozing with fine bubble. Quite a rich earthy and savory bouquet with a plenty of autolysis up front; fruit aromas include baked strawberry and quince with red apple nuances. On the palate - savory, crisp, earthy and dry - quite masculine in nature. The fruits do return for a wee wave, the wine seems built around its savory and bottle development characters. The mousse is bold and intense at first then subsides quickly to a quiet prickle. Overall - good, dry, very drinkable and should work well with food. In fact am off to a Thanksgiving lunch - I'll test its potential there." Drink 2019 - 2024

4 Stars Michael Cooper (2012 vintage)

"Showing good complexity, the 2012 vintage (4*), currently on sale, was estate-grown in Central Otago. Pale pink/orange, with a fragrant, yeasty bouquet, it is crisp and lively, with peachy, strawberryish, yeasty flavours, and a dry (4.3 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish. Ready."
