93+ Points
From very old vines - up to 130 years - this absolutely stellar Shiraz from Ben Glaetzer is all about quality over quantity. In other words, loads of flavour but not an overbearing style and instead extremely elegant, with beautiful defined fruit and spicy complexity sitting nicely in a perfectly balanced, supple and sophisticated palate. Very graceful now it will continue to age as such for a good while. Hard to imagine a better example of this modern Aussie style.

Its Origins

Ben Glaetzer makes unique, elegant wines with minimal intervention, which are regarded as classics and unmistakably Barossa. His ability to blend traditional winemaking techniques with a modern flair is reflected in the style of all wines under the Glaetzer label. All fruit for Glaetzer Wines is taken from the small sub-region of the northern Barossa Valley, called Ebenezer. The ancient dry-grown vineyards in the renowned Ebenezer district are an important part of Australia’s winemaking heritage and a living link to traditional Barossa viticulture. Exceptional fruit from a loyal group of third and fourth generation Barossa grape growers is the backbone of Glaetzer wines. The most exceptional fruit is sourced from 80-110 year old, non-grafted bush vines which are extremely low yielding. The very old vines require minimal attention. Their deep root structure means they are self-sufficient and can adapt to climatic extremes. Ebenezer has a unique soil profile. The well-drained sandy clay loam over a solid limestone pan is perfect for growing Shiraz. The soil is 'mean' and encourages deep roots which helps produce hugely concentrated wines of great character.

What The Critics Say

96+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Amon-Ra Shiraz has a youthfully mute nose, offering glimpses at the blackberry, blackcurrant and licorice core, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, cigar boxes, fertile earth and baking spices. The full-bodied palate delivers concentrated, muscular blackberry and earth flavors with plenty of freshness and a beautiful backbone of finely grained tannins, finishing with commendable persistence and layers. This is a great contender for wine of the vintage!" Drink 2018 - 2032

95/100 The Wine Front, Gary Walsh

"Rich blackberry and Black Forest gateau, sage and floral perfume, baking spices and vanilla. Full bodied, full of dark cherry and blackberry, but kind of light on its feet too. It’s not thick or gluggy, and the acidity is noted, but not intrusive. Tannin is firm and fine grained, and carries long into the gently earthy and saline finish. It’s the best Amon Ra for a few years, I’d say."

94/100 Josh Reynolds Vinous

"(aged for 14 months in new oak, 90% French and the rest American): Inky purple. An explosively perfumed bouquet evokes ripe blueberry, cherry-cola, incense and vanilla, with a suave floral overtone building in the glass. Stains the palate with sweet, deeply concentrated black and blue fruit and violet pastille flavors, with juicy acidity providing shape and lift. Vanilla, mocha and dark fruit liqueur notes cling on a strikingly long, expansive finish framed by supple tannins. This big boy is wearing its 15.5% alcohol gracefully and while it won't win any prizes for delicacy, fans of the type--which includes this writer when the wine is done right--will adore it." Drink 2022 - 2029
