A spectacular Chardonnay from a seriously underrated region for the grape - Marlborough. Giesen's foray into top-end single vineyard work shines here with this world beating example from the legendary Clayvin vineyard. Densely packed with citric and stone fruit and mealy, minerally character, this wine has all the generosity and underlying power we expect of top rung Chardonnay. And what marks it as a Marlborough wine is a brightness of aromatics and acidity that is so welcome for both enjoying young, and for a delicious development over time.

Its Origins

Giesen Wines are a long established label on the New Zealand scene. But as the family have gained expertise and expanded into personal projects - such as Marcel Giesen’s little known but lauded boutique Waipara estate, Bell Hill - the Giesen label too has shifted to capture their deep expertise in terroir and technique by adding new high-investment, single vineyard offerings such as those from the "revered" Clayvin vineyard, made famous by Fromm wines. The three German brother’s Alex, Theo and Marcel came to New Zealand to establish their first Riesling vineyards in Canterbury. In a then-small market, the Geisen brand grew with the times to take a position as one of New Zealand’s leading producers, and still enjoys a significant local and international distribution for various levels of high quality wine in many varieties and styles. Their new mid and upper level offerings are gaining significant recognition: wines like the Clayvin Pinot Noir is not only from great terroir but beautifully styled, placing it second to none among New Zealand’s premium examples of the grape.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Generously proportioned chardonnay with power-plus yet perfectly balanced and showing nice integration from a little bottle age. Mineral, oyster shell, grapefruit, white peach, toasted nut and brioche with a hint of floral character. A complex wine with impressive length and development potential. 5/11/2016" Drink 2016 - 2022

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"From Giesen, this wine is grown in the famous Clayvin Vineyard, in the Brancott Valley, and fermented and matured in 1000-litre German oak casks (fuders), which 'develop greater complexity and refinement, but the oak doesn't dominate'. The tight, youthful, age-worthy 2014 vintage (5*) is bright, light lemon/green, with a fragrant, complex, slightly smoky bouquet. Mouthfilling, it is elegant, with concentrated grapefruit and peach flavours, integrated oak, fine acidity, and a powerful, lasting finish." Drink 2016 - 2023

95+/100 Parker's Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (2013 vintage)

"Wow - the brand new 2013 The Fuder Clayvin Chardonnay sure adds to the growing list of absolute knock-out Chardonnay's of true global significance emerging these days from New Zealand. The highly revered Clayvin vineyard, from which this comes, does not fail to live up to its reputation, yielding a profoundly intense and complex wine redolent of ripe peaches, acacia honey, cashews and crushed chalk with marzipan and brioche nuances. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with savory and mineral flavors with a satiny texture and lively acid backbone, finishing with lingering honey-nut notes."
