Its Origins
It was by chance that 4th generation Swiss winemaker Georg Fromm (of Weingut Fromm in Malans) and his family were travelling around New Zealand and happened to meet, firstly, the Cudden family – a Marlborough family with a small vineyard, and secondly, Hätsch Kalberer a Swiss born winemaker based in Gisborne working for Matawhero winery at the time. From these initial meetings in the late 1980’s, an idea was born by Georg – to purchase a piece of land and develop a winery, with the help of new friend Hätsch Kalberer who had experience in both the traditional ways of European winemaking and understood the New Zealand way of wine. Two years later in January 1992, after the talking became planning, and the planning then planting, Fromm Winery had officially started.
What The Critics Say
94/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"At a mere 12% alcohol, this is perfectly ripe, fragrant and inviting on the nose with black/blueberry, Black Doris plum, violet and a hint of white pepper aromas. The palate is concentrated and generously flavoured, backed by plenty of supple tannins. Youthful and instantly charming, the wine is approachable yet promises to develop magnificently. At its best: 2017 to 2028. $40.00. Certified organic. www.frommwinery.co.nz. Nov 2015." Drink 2017 - 2028
93/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Bright, fresh and spicy Syrah with floral, violet, white pepper, plum and nutty oak flavours. Elegant supple Syrah that has been co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier to add to the wine's perfume and contribute to its silken texture. Lengthy finish features chocolate and chewy tannins. 12/1/2016." Drink 2016 - 2021
