54% Merlot, 31% Malbec, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon
The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Rich and warming red, with ripe berry and plum flavours together with subtle savoury edge and a generous helping of spicy French oak. A very appealing and quite complex red that can be enjoyed now but will be better in a few years 3/6/2017." Drink 2017 - 2024
4.5 Stars Michael Cooper
"This powerful, classy wine is typically one of Hawke's Bay's greatest reds (it is always Merlot-based, but the proportions of minor varieties vary). Grown in the company's Ngakirikiri Vineyard and the Cornerstone Vineyard, both in the Gimblett Gravels, it is matured for up to 20 months in French oak barriques (40 per cent new in 2014). The 2014 vintage (4.5*) is a concentrated blend of Merlot (54 per cent) with Malbec (31 per cent), Cabernet Franc (10 per cent) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5 per cent). Very full-bodied, with a strong surge of ripe dark berry and plum flavours, it has savoury notes adding complexity, supple tannins, and a rich, rounded finish." Drink 2018 - 2030
