A seriously rich Syrah from Esk Valley's Cornerstone Vineyard, Gimblett Gravels. One of the country's best in this style, the Winemaker's Reserve is packed full of dense, ripe dark fruits and earthy spice. Bob Campbell rated the 2013 of this label #1 in Hawkes Bay Syrah, while giving this 2014 a 95 point score (which it also got from Australia's toughest reviewer, Huon Hooke). A powerful Syrah for enjoyment now or medium-term cellaring, this delivers well above the price.

Its Origins

The original facilities were erected in 1933, called Glenvale, and after decades of fortified wine production it wasn’t until the late 1970s - still very early in the New Zealand premium table wine market - that Glenvale created the Esk Valley label to meet that demand. Price wars in the 1980’s saw Glenvale perish and the Esk Valley label picked up by George Fistonich of Villa Maria. Although it has been able to operate as a separate winery and develop its increasingly historic and iconic position, the investment and backing of the Villa Maria group has ensured it access not only to the best personnel and technology, but the best markets. Today, Esk Valley is a benchmark of elegant, quality-focussed Hawkes Bay production and its ‘Terraces’ Bordeaux Blend is a towering classic of New Zealand red wine.

What The Critics Say

95/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Dense, deep syrah with ripe dark berry, plum, liquorice. dark chocolate, mocha and spicy oak flavours. A brooding but accessible red, with sweet fruit supported by a backbone of ripe tannins. Will develop well with bottle age 6/4/2017." Drink 2017 - 2024

19/20 Raymond Chan

"Deep, dense purple/red colour. Tntense peppery aromas, of cool-grown syrah: white pepper, clove and spice. Fragrant and floral. The wine is full-bodied and rich, big and brawny in the mouth, with loads of tannin and acid balancing out the fruit sweetness and generous fruit flavour. Robust but elegant at the same time. A real mouthful, and worthwhile cellaring. 13 OCT 2016." Drink 2016 - 2034

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"Densely coloured, the youthful 2014 vintage (5*) was grown in the Cornerstone Vineyard and matured for 16 months in French oak barriques (55 per cent new). A richly varietal, youthful, vibrantly fruity red, it is sturdy (14.5 per cent alcohol), with highly concentrated, ripe plum, blackcurrant and spice flavours and a tightly structured, firm, lasting finish."
