A compelling Barolo with focused dark fruit and savoury character. We love this for the density of flavour and expressive charisma, balancing out the florals and firm acid-tannin structure. It could be approached with some caution soon, but it would be more ideal to put some of these beauties into the cellar before they're gone.

Its Origins

After working with Marcarini in La Morra, Elvio Cogno returned to his family village in 1990 to rebuild an historical farm into the home of one of Piedmont's more important Barolo producers. Now daughter Nadia and her husband Valter Fissore are the force behind the rising fortunes of the house, producing strictly classic wines with modern cleanliness and technique, low yields and sustainable, closely managed vineyards.

What The Critics Say

95/100 James Suckling

"The fruit and depth of this wine is very pretty. With brightness and transparency. Plums, and cherries with dried flowers and spices. Medium to full bodied, bright fruit and acidity. A powerful finish. A fantastic 2014. Drink in 2020."

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Cogno's 2014 Barolo Ravera is tense and crystalline in feel, with striking translucence and a level of purity in its flavors and textures that is beguiling. The inner tension in the 2014 is simply alluring. Bright, red-toned fruit, floral overtones and piercing saline underpinnings all come to life in this compelling, deeply expressive Barolo from Elvio Cogno." Drink 2022 - 2039

17.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Beautiful flowery cherry nose that is still a little bit reductive. Balsamic hint and a touch of liquorice. Supple and with savoury minerally impact on the palate. Gorgeous balance between savoury fruit and firm, savoury tannins, like sucking ripe stalks. Novello. Skin maceration for more than 40 days (!). MLF in stainless steel immediately after the alcoholic fermentation. Aged for 24 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 50, 30 and 25 hl.(WS)." Drink 2020 - 2030
