Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.
What The Critics Say
95/100 Wine Orbit, Sam Kim
"Wonderfully harmonious and immensely attractive, this outstanding Bordeaux blend shows complex aromas of cassis, blueberry, floral and toasted almond with hints of dried herb and game. The palate delivers superb concentration and rounded mouthfeel, enhanced by silky texture and gorgeous fruit purity. The wine is brilliantly structured by seamlessly integrated fine, chalky tannins, providing excellent structure and length. A wine of considerable presence, destine to evolve magnificently. At its best: 2019 to 2030. $49.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Aug 2016." Drink 2019 - 2030
96/100 Bob Campbell MW
"Dense, vibrant red with dark berry, cassis, liquorice, coffee/mocha and mixed spice character, plus a subtle savoury influence and a backbone of classy oak. A solidly structured wine with obvious cellaring potential, but a core of sweet fruit helps to make the wine accessible now." Drink 2016 - 2025
5 Stars Michael Cooper
"The powerful, finely textured, harmonious 2014 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the company's vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle, and matured for 19 months in French oak casks (40 per cent new). The colour is dark and youthful; the palate sturdy and sweet-fruited, with dense plum, spice and nut flavours, hints of blackcurrants and dark chocolate, and a long, supple finish. A generous red, it's already enjoyable, but likely to be at its best 2018+."
