Rich and intense with aromas of ripe black berry and blackcurrant. This is opulence personified. Built for the long haul.

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

18.5+/20 Raymond Chan

"Very dark, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with purple hues. The nose is firm and intensely concentrated with well-ripened, sweetly aromatic black berry and black plum fruits along with subtle spice notes and nutty oak, unfolding red and violet floral elements providing an intriguing aromatic fragrance. Medium-full bodied, the palate features rich and sweet, ripe fruit flavours of blackberries, dark-red plums, liquorice, unfolding nuances of boysenberries and blue fruits. Spice and oak unfold to add layers of interest. Fine-grained tannins provide a firm, linear, and concentrated heart, but the wine retains elegance and proportion. The acidity is integrated and fruit richness and power drives the wine to a long, dry finish of spicy plums and redcurrants. Serve with roasted lamb, beef and venison over 7-9+ years. A blend of 60% Merlot. 25% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the fruit 60% from the ‘Triangle’ site and 40% ‘Gimblett’, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 40% new oak, blended and aged 6 months on lees in tank. "

96/100 Bob Campbell

"Dense, vibrant red with dark berry, cassis, liquorice, coffee/mocha and mixed spice character, plus a subtle savoury influence and a backbone of classy oak. A solidly structured wine with obvious cellaring potential, but a core of sweet fruit helps to make the wine accessible now. "

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The powerful, finely textured, harmonious 2014 vintage (5*) was hand-picked in the company's vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels and Bridge Pa Triangle, and matured for 19 months in French oak casks (40 per cent new). The colour is dark and youthful; the palate sturdy and sweet-fruited, with dense plum, spice and nut flavours, hints of blackcurrants and dark chocolate, and a long, supple finish. A generous red, it's already enjoyable, but likely to be at its best 2018+."
