Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

"A gorgeous merlot, syrah and cabernet sauvignon blend, the wine shows perfumed aromas of cassis, dark plum, blueberry and floral with subtle cedary oak complexity. The palate delivers excellent fruit concentration and silky texture, beautifully enhanced by rounded mouthfeel and supple tannins. The wine is immediately appealing and drinkable, although it should evolve graciously. Wonderful balance and integration. At its best: now to 2022. Aug 2015."

"Full, very dark, near impenetrable black-red colour with lighter purple hues on the rim. The nose is softly full and harmoniously interwoven with aromas of ripe black berried and plum fruit, black ink and minerals, and complexing toasty oak and reductive char layers. Medium-bodied, the palate features soft, plush and juicy flavours of ripe black berry and plum fruit melded with distinctive oak toast and char-like waves. The fruit forms a finely concentrated core and the mouthfeel shows soft, ripe, fine-grained tannin textures and background acidity in support, lending a degree of firmness to the line. The wine carries to a soft, dry, lingering finish with char and toasty nuances. This is a soft, succulent, black-fruited, Merlot-based blend with charry notes and a fine-textured, dry finish. Match with barbecued and grilled red meats over the next 5-6 years. A blend of 61% Merlot, 26% Syrah and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon hand-picked from the Gimblett, Te Awanga and Triangle vineyards, destemmed and fermented over 14 days to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in oak. 17.5/20 Sep 2015 RRP $24.00."
