Double Gold China Wine & Spirit Awards, Gold Medal Air NZ Wine Awards, 5 stars (94/100) Sam Kim’s Wine Orbit, In serious danger of becoming a classic, this consistent stunner from Elephant Hill must be one of the world's best estate Syrahs. Another good vintage played into their expert hands, producing huge depth of black fruit but also beautifully refined florals, subtle earth and spice, all delivered on a very long, dry, harmonious and seamless palate. Beautiful stuff at bargain price - drink or cellar but grab it quick!

Its Origins

Reydan and Roger Weiss first fell in love with the beauty of Te Awanga when visiting from Germany in 2001. Together they envisaged owning a state-of-the-art winery, merging the traditional values of wine making with an innovative approach and contemporary style to produce exceptional wines to savour and enjoy. With the majestic elephant as their namesake and nestled against a backdrop of rolling hillsides, Elephant Hill spans over 25 hectares of vineyards producing classical, aromatics whites and world-class reds, helmed by winemaker Steve Skinner.

What The Critics Say

94/100 Sam Kim

"Following the fabulous 2013 rendition, this is another gratifying syrah with awesome fruit purity and richness. Fragrant aromas of dark plum, blueberry, floral, cedar and white pepper lead to a succulent palate that is concentrated and richly textured. The wine shows wonderful fruit intensity as well as refinement, and promises to develop beautifully. At its best: 2016 to 2024. $34.00. www.elephanthill.co.nz. Aug 2015."

18/20 Raymond Chan

"Full, saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. This has an elegantly proportioned, tightly bound nose of ripe black berried fruits entwined with mineral notes, the aromatics building in intensity, revealing piquant blue fruits, violet fragrances and subtly penetrating black earth and reductive complexities. Medium-full bodied and elegant in presentation, the palate features tightly concentrated flavours of ripe black-berried fruits infused with black minerals and complex reductive elements forming a refined, firm core and line. The fruit is underlined by powdery tannin textures and structure with ripe, integrated acidity. The fruit sweetness grows, and unveils complexing black plum, violet floral, black pepper and spice detail which carries to a long, fine-featured finish. This is a very elegant, tightly bound Syrah with black fruit and minerally flavours and a refined, firm structure. Match with game meat dishes and semi-hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years. MS, Chave and 470 clone fruit from the company’s Gimblett, Triangle and Te Awanga vineyards, fermented with a small portion of whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 30% new French oak barriques. 18.0/20 Sep 2015 RRP $34.00."
