This graceful, medium-bodied old vine Chateauneuf from the impeccable Janasse Winery will drink now or age gracefully for a decade. A unique drop, this cuvee is composed of 100% Grenache from very old vines - some planted as early as 1912. It is hard to imagine a fuller yet more balanced and polished expression of Chateauneuf - truly delectable.

Its Origins

Domaine de la Janasse was established in 1973 by Aimé Sabon. Brother and sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon continue to work wonders at Janasse, and farm 80 hectares of vineyards spread over a number of wine appellations: Châteauneuf du Pâpe, which is all located in the north-east of the appellation in the commune of Courthézon to be precise, Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Village, but also Vin de Pays de la Principauté d'Orange and Vin de table. Concrete tanks are used for the Grenache and oak for the Syrah and Mourvèdre; in other words, everything is fairly traditional; it is the quality of the raw materials which is so impressive and for that reason alone, leaving aside the clear skill and vision of the Sabons, that we are delighted to take on these excellent wines in our listings.

What The Critics Say

92-94/100 Parer's Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck

"One of the more charming, sexy and approachable versions of this cuvée, the 2014 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin has beautiful ripeness and density to go with the classic perfumed, floral and sweetly fruited profile that this cuvée almost always shows. I always find an almost essence of Grenache character with this cuvée, and the 2014 is no exception. Drink it anytime over the coming decade or so...These latest 2013 and 2014s from the brother/sister pair of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon are easily some of the finest wines in the vintages, with both vintages possessing impressive levels of fruit and texture. In addition to their stunning Châteauneuf du Papes (both red and white), their lineup of Côtes du Rhônes continues to knock it out of the park and represents superb value. Looking at the 2014s, these were harvest from September 15 to October 2. Even though this was a large crop, yields here were down over 20% due to dropped crop. When asked which vintage he preferred, 2013 or 2014, Christophe couldn’t pick a favorite, but compared 2014 to 2004 and 2013 to 1999."

91-93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds

"Limpid ruby. Intense, highly perfumed blue fruit and floral pastille aromas are complemented by suggestions of allspice and licorice. Silky and focused on the palate, offering concentrated boysenberry and cherry flavors that take a darker turn as the wine opens up. Finishes impressively long, displaying lingering berry and floral nuances, gentle tannins and a touch of smoky minerals."
