Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.
5 Stars Raymond Chan
"Bright straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, lighter on edge. The bouquet is firmly concentrated with deep aromas of greengages, nectarines and fresh herbs, harmoniously melded with complexing reductive gunflint and mineral layers. The aromatics are intense and youthfully fresh, but stylishly in presentation, revealing white florals and lifted herb elements, along with an array of stonefruit. Dry to taste and full-bodied, rich, bold and concentrated flavours of green stonefruits, fresh herbs, white florals and gunflint complexities feature on a fulsome, well-structured palate. This is mouthfilling and weighty with grip and presence, and the mouthfeel lively with refreshing, lacy acidity. The wine flows with power, texture and drive, leading to a long, dry finish with herb, greengage and minerally detail. This is a rich, powerfully structured and textural oak-influenced Sauvignon Blanc with green stonefruit and complex reductive complexities. Match with herb-marinated white meat dishes over the next 4-5 years. Fruit from a single block on the ‘Dog Point’ vineyard, hand-picked, WBP and fully barrel-fermented with solids by indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc. and 2.2 g/L RS, the wine aged 18 months in seasoned oak, the wine undergoing occasional batonnage and no MLF. 19.0/20 Apr 2015 RRP $35.00."
