An icon of complex Kiwi Sav that's more like a top French Sancerre. Dog Point are from the early Cloudy Bay orbit, so this oak-age style is similar to by Cloudy's Te Koko though it has zero new oak and malolactic creaminess, making it an extremely fine, intense and complex white. The best of new and old world Sauvignon in one bottle. Enjoy with food.

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, the former chief viticulturalist and head winemaker at Cloudy Bay. After leaving Cloudy Bay, Ivan and James began making wines from Sutherland's own vineyards, which were planted in the 70's and 80's. Additional fruit is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's. The first vintage with the Dog Point label was 2004, using 2002 fruit. Over 200 hectares of vines are farmed, with sustainable/organic practices.

What The Critics Say

96/100 Bob Campbell MW

"Tantalising sauvignon blanc made from grapes grown on 29-year-old vines and aged in older French oak barrels for 18 months. Taut, savoury wine with chalky-mineral, struck-flint reductive characters and nut, ginger yeast lees supported by vibrant acidity. A harmonious wine from a top vintage. Should continue to age gracefully 11 NOV 2020." Drink 2020 - 2026

96/100 Cameron Douglas MS

"Distinctive, complex, developing, enticing. Aromas of integration, white fleshed fruits and citrus, a mix of primary and developing bottle-age complexity. On the palate - immediately fruity with barrel ferment combinations - grapefruit and lemon, apple and lees autolysis. The back palate shows-off the gentle vanilla and custard sweetness of oak. Still fresh and youthful with medium+ acidity and lengthy detailed finish. A fantastic wine. Best drinking from today and through 2026+." Drink 2020 - 2026+

95/100 The Real Review, Huon Hooke

"Medium yellow colour, which hints at some barrel maturation - as it indeed smells. The palate is rich and full, with generous flavour yet not at the expense of delicacy. Complex, nutty, toasty, smoky and citrusy, with tropical highlights. Zesty acidity, good persistence and aging potential. A lovely wine with lots of detail. 27 AUG 2016." Drink 2016 - 2024
