One of New Zealand's best Chardonnays. Dog Point make a fine and complex wine using indigenous yeast and lees aging with 18 months in mostly old French oak. This is a distinctively old world style of citric, flinty, nutty and mineral Chardonnay that few producers have the experience or authenticity to attempt. It has the intensity that Chard drinkers love, but also the cut and poise to please any serious white drinker. Cellar or decant and watch it unfold.

Its Origins

Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable winegrowing experience of Ivan Sutherland and James Healy - both of whom were key players in establishing the quality of Marlborough's Cloudy Bay Vineyard. Their philosophy is total involvement from the vineyard through the winemaking process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines. Fruit for their wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the late 1970's.

What The Critics Say

4.5 Stars Michael Cooper

"This classy, single-vineyard wine is grown on the south side of the Wairau Valley, hand-picked, fermented and matured for 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques (15 to 25 per cent new), and given a full, softening malolactic fermentation. Bright, light lemon/green, the 2014 vintage (4.5*) is a sweet-fruited, bone-dry wine with very youthful, grapefruit-like flavours threaded with fresh acidity, slightly toasty notes, a minerally streak, and excellent vibrancy, delicacy, poise and length. A distinctly cool-climate style, it's well worth cellaring to mid-2017+."

19.5/20 Raymond Chan

"Bright, deep, yellow colour with pale gold hues, lighter on edge. This has a full bold and powerful nose with harmoniously packed aromas of white and yellow stonefruits entwined with citrus fruits, nuts and minerals. Complexing smoke, reductive lees and gunflint, toast and oak vanillins emerge to add richness to the core of fruit. Medium-full bodied, the palate features concentrated and intense, fresh white stonefruit and citrus fruit flavours melded with nutty and creamy barrel-ferment elements and complexing mineral and gunflint layers. The fruit and oak sweetness is balanced by fine, crisp acidity and minerality, and the wine flows with tension and linearity to a very long and sustained, fine-textured finish. Match with grilled and roasted seafood, poultry and pork dishes over the next 5-6 years. 63.5% Mendoza and 36.5% clone 95 fruit from the ‘Dog Point’ vineyard, hand-picked, WBP and barrel-fermented with full solids by indigenous yeasts to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 15% new French oak, undergoing batonnage and MLF. 19.5/20 Apr 2016 RRP $35.00."

96/100 Bob Campbell (2013 vintage)

"Very pure, almost ethereal Chardonnay with gentle citrus/grapefruit and mineral flavours together with a suggestion of honey and subtle yeast lees and oak influence. Youthful wine that is delicious now but will develop wonderfully with bottle age."
