93+ Points
This superb Bannockburn wine is our best discovery from Central Otago. Steve Davies made wine for Carrick and Akarua before developing his own vineyard, from which some of the fruit also goes to icons Valli for their famous Bannockburn Pinot. In other words, just quietly, this wine has pedigree written all over it. The result is subtly powerful and refined, with brooding dark fruit in a fine, firm, supple core of great freshness, depth and mineral layering. Assured and sophisticated, Doctor's Flat is a step above other Central Pinot at the price. Drink now or cellar a good while...

Pinot Noir

Its Origins

The story of Doctor's Flat Vineyard begins in the late 1980s, in France and California, where Steve Davies first encountered great practitioners of old world winemaking, and the best of new world innovators. By 1999 Steve had settled in Central Otago, making Pinot for Akarua and on the hunt for his own land. He was looking for something in particular—a site that would offer all the conditions he had come to believe were essential for great Pinot. It was a long and thorough search, and in 2002 he found it, an elevated site on deep glacial gravels in Bannockburn. After then making wine for Carrick and supplying grapes to Valli, Steve's Doctor's Flat label is establishing a stellar reputation in New Zealand and overseas for sheer quality and command of both style and terroir.

What The Critics Say

5 Stars Michael Cooper

"The classy 2014 vintage (5*) is a single-vineyard red, grown at Bannockburn, matured for a year in French oak barrels (25 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtering. Deep ruby, it is mouthfilling, rich and savoury, with deep, ripe plum/spice flavours, showing excellent complexity, and fine-grained tannins. Very generous and savoury, it's approachable now, but likely to be at its best 2018+." Drink 2017 - 2022

5 Stars Raymond Chan

Dark ruby-red colour. This is elegant in expression with very good intensity. The dark-red berry fruit unveils savoury dried herb complexities. The palate is rich and vibrant. Some dried herb and whole bunch stalk complexity adds detail to the dark-red berry fruits. The tannins are fine-grained and the acidity enlivens the mouthfeel. This has an attractively sweet-fruited finish. 18.5/20

96/100 Wine Orbit Magazine, Sam Kim (2013 vintage)

"This is a beautifully composed and impressively structured pinot from one of the top-notch producers in Central Otago. From their 3 hectare vineyard in the Bannockburn district, this awesome pinot shows pristine aromas of red/black cherry, plum and floral with nuances of toasted almond, mixed spice and dried herb. The palate is concentrated and refined with outstanding focus and grainy texture, leading to an extremely long, seamless finish. At its best: 2017 to 2028."
