85% Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo
The Cune label now occupies the mid-range of the Cvne hierarchy, but the name is based in the family's orginal hometown of Haro, Rioja Alta. It was there that Cvne were established in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo, and over the decades they became and remained one of Rioja's most reliable sources of high quality wine. Soon comprising three bodegas (Asua de Real, Cune and Contino) they maintained the distinctiveness of each, with the Cune label's stylistic integrity built around a balance of old and new style Rioja: clean, juicy fruit with oak influence and ageworthy acid and tannin structure.
What The Critics Say
90/100 James Suckling
"A fresh and easy Rioja that shows plum and cherry character. Hints of cream. Mushroom, too. Medium body, low tannins and a crisp finish. Delicious now."
Parker's Wine Advocate, Luis Gutierrez
"I caught the 2014 Cune Crianza a couple of months before they started bottling it, but I wanted to preview it. It's a light and red fruit-driven Crianza matured in oak barrels for one year. This is the canonical blend of 85 % Tempranillo and 15% between Garnacha and Mazuelo. The wine aims for some consistency across vintages, as its drinkers do not want a lot of surprises. 2014 was a cooler year, but as the grapes took more time to ripen, perhaps they got slightly riper; it shows aromas of damsons and very ripe plums with hints of raisins. 4.5 million bottles produced in eight different lots."
