The magnificent red is rich and complex, but silky smooth. As good as it gets out of Spain, the voluptuous yet delicate Tempranillo under the eponymous Felix Callejo label is the prized top offering from our favourite Ribera del Douro producer. Worthy of age yet hedonistic straight from the bottle, this is one hell of a wine.

Its Origins

The Callejo family owns 60 hectares of low yielding Tempranillo vines (Tinto Fino as it is known in Ribera del Duero) ranging in age from 25-70 years. Felix Callejo uses grapes from its Estate only. The grapes are carefully selected and hand picked into small cases of 30 pounds. Carried in small quantities, there is no danger of having the grape skins break and sparking an undesired premature fermentation. The crates are taken directly to the winery, where they go through two selection tables, the second one selecting grape by grape and discarding any imperfect grapes.

What The Critics Say

93/100 Vinous, Josh Raynolds (2011 vintage)

"(aged for 15 months in new French oak): Dark purple. Heady, intensely perfumed aromas of black and blue fruit liqueur, vanilla, incense and woodsmoke. Picks up spice and floral qualities with air, with its palate-staining blueberry and cherry-vanilla flavors stretching out with air. Dusty tannins come in late, adding grip and focus. Closes with outstanding clarity and length, leaving sweet vanilla and violet pastille notes behind."

90/100 Wine Advocate, Neal Martin (2009 vintage)

"The 2009 Callejo Crianza comes from 40-year-old vines and is aged for 15 months in new French oak. That oak is well-integrated on the nose with luscious black cherries, blueberry and lavender scents. The palate is medium-bodied with silky smooth tannins and while a lot of oak is evident, it is nicely integrated with the luscious dark cherry and blueberry fruit, with a faint hint of balsamic on the finish. This is another admirable Crianza. Drink 2013-2020."
