Giovan Battista Burlotto was one of those who put Barolo on the map, establishing his estate in the late 1800s and becoming the first to both put wines in bottle (rather than cask) and to do so in the 'French' style - i.e. labelled with the name of his estate. (And with such deserved awards as “Supplier to the Savoy Royal Household”). While the towns of Serralunga d'Alba and La Morra dominated the Barolo world, Burlotto's other major contribution was to raise the reputation of his village Verduno almost to their level - which he did mainly on the virtue of one remarkable vineyard, Monvigliero, the south-facing, white marl slopes of which produce a powerful richness and distinctive truffle/tapenade spectrum of characters. After Burlotto's death the profile of Verduno slowly faded, but the inherent virtues of the terroir remained and the estate’s fortunes eventually revived. Now the helm is taken by Burlotto's great-great-grandson, Fabio Alessandria, whose impressive but sensitive modernising achievements echo those of the many other top-ranked Barolo producers of today. With the increasing importance of 'Cru' vineyards in Barolo in general, and intense interest in the Monvigliero Cru in particular, Burlotto's label is once again slipping into the world spotlight.
What The Critics Say
91/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni
"Burlotto's 2014 Barolo is delicate, gracious and very pretty. Floral and supremely inviting, it is a fabulous wine for the year, and the midweight, perfumed style of the vintage comes through loud and clear. In 2014, Burlotto did not make their Barolo Acclivi. Instead, all of the wine that would have gone into that blend went into this, the entry-level bottling, which is a testament to Fabio Alessandria's commitment to delivering not just quality but also value among his more affordable wines."
