A highlight of the Bruno Rocca range, moving to esteemed Rabaja was where it all began for them in the 1950s. A wine of immense distinction and directness, this is unlike most Barbaresco you will see. With an influence of small format French oak enriching the mouth feel and underlining the savoury power, this is a deeply compelling offering from a bold and progressive producer not afraid to break the moulds to capture the vineyard they love so well.

Its Origins

Bruno Rocca’s parents bought the estate's current property in the 1950‘s when they moved to Rabaja from Barbaresco. Bruno took over the estate when his father died in 1978. As a consummate modernist, Bruno uses modern technology to produce wines with tremendous intensity of fruit balanced by the characteristic Piemontese structure and a judicious use of oak. His wines look, smell and taste like real Nebbiolo and unlike an increasing number of other Piemonte producers, he never feels the need to add a certain extra something to deepen the colour or round out the palate. Bruno started bottling in 1978 and since then has risen to the top of the quality tree in this area, producing a Barbaresco and the single vineyard Rabaja Barbaresco. His daughter, Luisa now works with him at the estate as the marketing manager.

What The Critics Say

95/100 The Wine Front, Mike Bennie

"Organic farming is the baseline for Bruno Rocca, but a gentle hand in winery follows. Spends about 9-10 months in barrique but very low (less than 10%) is new oak, split across all production. Rabaja mainlined here. Despite vagaries of the vintage, this is an outstanding result, and a fantastic wine, full of character. Beautiful perfume so fragrant with ripe cherry/sour cherry, rose water, game meat brambles, white pepper. Fine web of tannin draped over just-ripe red cherry fruitiness, dusted with peppery spice, spiked with Italianate herbs and amaro-like sour-sweet tang. So delicate and fine. The finish is long, softly chewy, satisfying in its draw and pucker. Luxurious yet relaxed, but not without structure. It’s a wonderful understated expression. Outstanding."

94/100 Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"Rocca's 2014 Barbaresco Rabajà captures an attractive stylistic middle ground between the depth that is typical of this site and the more vibrant, energetic style that is the house signature of the Bruno Rocca wines today. A classically austere, tannic wine, the 2014 is going to need a number of years to come together. Today, the 2014 is an intensely saline, focused wine."

17/20 JancisRobinson.com, Jancis Robinson

"Pale ruby. Earthy nose and lots of sweet fruit with a note of smoked sausage! Really quite remarkable sweetness of fruit! Anyone would enjoy this – surely even the greatest Francophile. Firm finish but obviously noble." Drink 2017 - 2030
