The elegance and power of the legendary Sarmassa vineyard shines through in this beautiful Brezza. Located in Barolo township, the ancient Sarmassa Cru's fame comes from old vines (70+) on a patchwork of sandy silty and clay which partly drains, partly retains moisture through hot summers. The result is fruit at perfect ripeness with savoury complexity and rounded, soft tannins that allow a longer extraction period - and thus an assertive but still supple structure. Approachable now with food, this classical style will also age very nicely.

Its Origins

Brezza is a private estate in Barolo township that includes both a winery and a restaurant. It was established in 1885 by Giacomo Brezza and his father Antonio, who bottled and released their first wine in 1910. It is now run by the fourth generation, and while it has modernised certain aspects of production - such as hand-destemming of grapes and temperature controlled fermentation - the house maintains a sense of tradition. This is evident not only in elements of the presentation and branding but also in the careful use of predominantly ‘classical’ techniques, such as aging wines in large 30hl casks of Slovenian oak. This careful traditionalism does not compromise the quality of their results, however. In fact, many would argue it enhances them, especially since modern Barolo values favour vineyard expression above all. And as owners of such prized local Crus as Cannubi and Sarmassa it is has been Brezza’s policy, for more than a century, to let their vineyards themselves do the talking.

What The Critics Say

16.5/20 JancisRobinson.com, Walter Speller

"Pale ruby. Some freshness and intensity on the nose. Remarkably smooth on the mid palate until the fine tannins insist on the very end. Rather noble and encouraging even if not for the very long term." Drink 2020 - 2028

Vinous, Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Barolo Sarmassa has a lot more depth than the other wines in the range. In 2014, Enzo Brezza chose to add the fruit that would have otherwise gone into his flagship Bricco Sarmassa to the straight Sarmassa." Drink 2018 - 2020

96/100 Wine Enthusiast (2013 vintage)

"Fragrant blue flower, dark spice, crushed herb and wild berry aromas are front and center on this impressive, structured red. The lively, energetic palate offers cranberry, red cherry, licorice and ground clove flavors set against youthful, noble tannins and firm acidity. A tobacco note lingers on the finish. It's still young and tightly wound but will blossom into a beauty over the next decade."
